For many commodities firms, confirming trades can still take several days. Operations teams are managing an increasing number of counterparties, asset classes, contract types, and document formats. Every new market, product, or trading relationship adds complexity, creating more exceptions, manual effort, and operational risk.
Why operational complexity is growing
To diversify revenue streams and navigate increasingly volatile markets driven by geopolitical disruption, commodities firms are expanding into new asset classes such as metals, power, and carbon markets, as well as into new regions. We’re also seeing rising volumes of bilateral and OTC trades, many involving long-form, complex contracts and bespoke documentation that can take longer to confirm.
At the same time, the nature of commodities trading is evolving. Commodities desks are increasingly transacting in structured derivatives, combined financial and physical books, cross-asset hybrid products, and other complex instruments that involve more advanced confirmation, settlement, and reconciliation requirements.
The result is a familiar challenge: operations teams spend significant time chasing confirmations, reconciling discrepancies, and managing exceptions, rather than focusing on higher-value activities.
Why late confirmation is an operational risk
Across OTC commodity trading, an unconfirmed or unmatched trade can create discrepancies in price, quantity, delivery period, or settlement terms that remain undetected. Those breaks may only surface during nomination, delivery, invoicing, or settlement, when they trigger disputes, rework, and delayed cash receipts.
For COOs and risk leaders, success is not measured solely by how quickly confirmations are issued. Other factors include how many trades remain unconfirmed, which commercial terms remain unmatched, and which ageing breaks are approaching delivery or settlement deadlines.
Where ETRM and CTRM systems stop
ETRM and CTRM platforms support trade capture, risk management, and many post-trade activities, but there are often gaps across the wider operating process. In Molecule’s 2025 survey, 64% of respondents cited incomplete support for critical business processes or the range of commodities they trade as their biggest system challenge.
The operational risk sits between trade booking and the obligations each counterparty acts on. A revised cargo quantity, pricing period, or delivery window may be agreed by email while the original terms remain in the trading system. A confirmation can be issued without being matched, leaving a commercial discrepancy unresolved as the cargo approaches loading or settlement.
When the booked trade, counterparty confirmation, and subsequent amendments are not aligned, operations teams must reconstruct the agreement, often resulting in demurrage claims, disputed invoices, and delayed cash receipts.
Data quality: the problem underneath
Behind many of these breaks is a data problem. Counterparty confirmations can arrive as PDFs, email attachments, broker and trader recaps, and signed copies returned by hand. Each counterparty uses a different layout, and each asset class has its own terms, from complex pricing periods and premiums to delivery ports that change after the trade is agreed.
Many firms respond by building and maintaining extraction templates for every counterparty and product, with some managing hundreds. As formats and contract structures change, templates need to be updated, and any missed details need to be manually re-keyed. Incomplete or incorrect data cascades through every downstream step, from matching to invoicing to settlement.
Managing this complexity manually doesn't scale. While most firms recognise they need more automation to keep pace, the question we often hear is: where should we start?

Xceptor at Energy Trading Week Americas
On Tuesday 27 October at Energy Trading Week Americas, we're taking part in a panel discussion and hosting a lunch and learn focused on helping operations leaders improve efficiency, reduce risk, and build a more scalable post-trade operating model.
You'll also find us at Booth #55 throughout the event.
Panel: Landing sequence: automating post-trade operations
Tuesday 27 October, 11:50am–12:30pm
Younus Khan, Senior Sales Engineer at Xceptor, will join speakers from Just Energy, Hartigen, and ATRMServices to discuss how firms can effectively build an automation strategy.
The panel will outline which post-trade processes to automate first and how to build a roadmap that delivers “quick wins” without disrupting daily trading, while supporting longer-term transformation.
Lunch and learn: Houston, we have a mismatch: A single control layer for post-trade
Tuesday 27 October, 1:15pm–2:00pm
After the panel, Younus will address the questions we hear most from operations leaders:
- Can you trust your trade data once it leaves the ETRM?
- Do agreed amendments actually reach your operations team?
- Can you prove, not assume, that you and your counterparty agree?
- How do you cut template maintenance without losing control of extraction?
- Where does AI genuinely help with exceptions, and where doesn't it?
We'll share how we're answering these questions for our clients, and how we can help you too, so bring your toughest post-trade headaches.
